How to do the Barbell Box Squat
Step by step
- Set a box or bench behind you at about knee height and rack the bar on your upper back.
- Stand just in front of the box with feet a bit wider than shoulders.
- Sit your hips back and down under control until you touch the box.
- Pause briefly on the box without fully relaxing, staying braced.
- Drive up through your feet to stand tall.
The thing people get wrong
Sit back to the box, do not just drop onto it - stay braced through the pause instead of collapsing your spine.
Coaching cue
Keep your shins fairly upright as you sit back so your hips take the work.
Stay safe
Set the box inside a rack with the safety pins set, so a failed rep has somewhere to land.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use a higher box so you squat less deep.
- Harder: Use a lower box, or pause three seconds before standing.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads, Glutes
- Secondary: Hamstrings, Core
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
