How to do the Barbell Shrug

Traps

Step by step

  1. Stand holding a barbell in front of your thighs with an overhand grip.
  2. Let your arms hang straight and keep your chest tall.
  3. Shrug your shoulders straight up toward your ears as high as possible.
  4. Pause at the top, then lower the bar back down slowly and fully.
The thing people get wrong

Keep your arms straight and move only your shoulders - bending your elbows to help turns it into a weak upright row instead of a shrug.

Coaching cue

Pause and squeeze at the very top of each shrug before lowering all the way back down.

Stay safe

Use a firm grip or straps on heavy sets; a bar that slips out of your hands drops straight onto your feet.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
