How to do the Battle Ropes

Cardio and Front delts · also works upper back, core

Step by step

  1. Anchor a heavy battle rope around a post or rack so both halves come back to you.
  2. Grip one end in each hand and step back until there is only light slack.
  3. Drop into an athletic stance with soft knees and a braced core.
  4. Rip the ropes up and down in fast, alternating waves for 20 to 30 seconds.
  5. Keep the waves traveling all the way to the anchor, then rest as needed.
The thing people get wrong

Keep your knees soft and your core braced so you stay stable - the power comes from your whole body, not just yanking with your arms.

Coaching cue

Keep your grip relaxed so your forearms do not burn out before the burst is over.

Stay safe

Check the anchor is solid before you start so the rope cannot pull loose and whip back at you.

Make it easier or harder
