How to do the Carioca Shuffle
Step by step
- Stand side-on to your direction of travel with a soft athletic stance.
- Cross your trailing foot in front of the lead foot, then step the lead foot out.
- Next cross the trailing foot behind, letting the hips rotate as you travel.
- Keep a light, quick, easy rhythm moving sideways, then repeat facing the other way.
- Take short breaks whenever you need - this should warm you up, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong
Let the hips rotate freely as you cross front and behind - keep it loose and rhythmic, not stiff or rushed.
Coaching cue
Stay light on the balls of your feet and keep the steps quick and short.
Stay safe
Start slow on a clear, flat surface; crossing your feet fast is easy to trip over.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Do plain side shuffles without crossing the feet until the rhythm feels easy.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Hips, Calves
- Secondary: Glutes, Core
