How to do the Dumbbell Bulgarian Split Squat
Step by step
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand and rest the top of one foot on a bench behind you.
- Set the front foot forward enough that the knee stays over the ankle.
- Lower straight down, dropping the back knee toward the floor.
- Keep your chest tall and weight on the front foot as the dumbbells hang at your sides.
- Drive up through the front foot, finish the set, then switch legs.
The thing people get wrong
Let the dumbbells hang and keep weight on the front foot - the load makes it tempting to push off the rear leg.
Coaching cue
Keep your front heel planted and your chest tall the whole way down.
Stay safe
If you lose your balance, drop the dumbbells out to your sides instead of trying to save the rep.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Do it with no weight until you can balance through every rep.
- Harder: Pause for two seconds at the bottom of each rep.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads, Glutes
- Secondary: Hamstrings, Core
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
