How to do the Dumbbell Chest Fly

Chest · also works front delts

Step by step

  1. Lie on a bench holding a dumbbell in each hand pressed above your chest.
  2. Keep a slight, fixed bend in your elbows like you are hugging a barrel.
  3. Open your arms out to the sides in a wide arc, lowering until you feel a chest stretch.
  4. Squeeze your chest to bring the dumbbells back together over your chest.
The thing people get wrong

Keep that soft elbow bend locked the whole time and stop where the stretch is comfortable - going too deep strains the shoulder joint.

Coaching cue

Use much lighter weights than you press; the long arm position multiplies the load.

Stay safe

Keep the dumbbells over your chest, not over your face, so a slip cannot land on your head.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
