How to do the Dumbbell Floor Press

Chest and Triceps · also works front delts

Step by step

  1. Lie on your back on the floor holding a dumbbell in each hand over your chest.
  2. Set your elbows at about a 45-degree angle from your sides.
  3. Lower the weights until your upper arms touch the floor softly, then pause a beat.
  4. Press straight back up over your chest until your arms are extended.
The thing people get wrong

Let your elbows kiss the floor lightly rather than bouncing off it - the pause is what makes this a safe, controlled press for the shoulders.

Coaching cue

Press the dumbbells straight up over your chest and stop just short of clanging them together.

Stay safe

Hold the dumbbells tight to your chest and roll onto your back to start, rather than lifting them over your head.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
