How to do the Dumbbell Shoulder Press

Front delts and Triceps · also works side delts, upper back

Step by step

  1. Sit or stand tall holding a dumbbell in each hand at shoulder height, palms facing forward.
  2. Brace your core and keep your ribs down.
  3. Press the dumbbells straight up until your arms are nearly straight overhead.
  4. Keep the weights over your shoulders, not drifting forward.
  5. Lower the dumbbells with control back to shoulder height.
The thing people get wrong

Keep your ribs down and core braced so you do not arch your lower back to press. Press up, not forward.

Coaching cue

Lower until your elbows are level with your shoulders before you press again.

Stay safe

If a rep stalls, let the dumbbells drop out to the sides away from your head instead of fighting them.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
