How to do the Dumbbell Side Bend
Step by step
- Stand tall with a dumbbell in one hand hanging at your side, other hand on your hip.
- Keep your feet about hip-width and your core lightly braced.
- Bend straight sideways toward the weighted hand, lowering the dumbbell down your leg.
- Bend only in the side plane, without leaning forward or back.
- Stand tall again by pulling with the opposite side of your waist, then finish your reps and switch hands.
The thing people get wrong
Keep the movement purely sideways with no twisting. Only hold weight on one side at a time so the opposite waist muscles do the work.
Coaching cue
Keep your hips still so the bend happens at your waist, not by pushing your hips sideways.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use a lighter dumbbell and a shorter bend.
- Harder: Use a heavier dumbbell and pause a beat at the bottom.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Core
