How to do the Dumbbell Squat

Quads and Glutes · also works core

Step by step

  1. Hold a dumbbell in each hand, arms hanging at your sides.
  2. Stand with feet about shoulder-width apart, toes slightly out.
  3. Push your hips back and bend your knees, lowering with the weights at your sides.
  4. Keep your chest tall and your whole foot planted through the descent.
  5. Drive through your feet to stand back up and finish tall.
The thing people get wrong

Let the dumbbells hang naturally next to your legs instead of swinging them forward, which would pull you off balance.

Coaching cue

Push your hips back first, then bend your knees, and keep your heels flat the whole way down.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
