How to do the Tall-Box Dumbbell Step-Up
Step by step
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand and stand facing a sturdy box or bench at about knee height or a little higher.
- Place one whole foot flat on the box - the higher the box, the harder the quad works.
- Push through that top foot to stand up onto the box, using as little push from the bottom leg as you can.
- Step back down softly and under control.
- Finish all your reps on that leg, then switch and repeat with the other leg.
The thing people get wrong
A higher box biases the quads - drive through the whole top foot and lower yourself softly instead of dropping off the box.
Coaching cue
Keep your whole foot on the box; if your heel hangs off, the box is too far away.
Stay safe
Use a box that cannot tip or slide; at this height a slip means falling with weights in your hands.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Lower the box to knee height or below until the tall step feels controlled.
- Harder: Hold the top position on one leg for a second before stepping down.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads
- Secondary: Glutes, Core
