How to do the Dumbbell Thrusters (Conditioning)
Step by step
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your shoulders and stand feet shoulder width.
- Sit into a front squat, keeping your chest tall and heels down.
- Drive up out of the squat and use that momentum to press the dumbbells overhead.
- Lower the dumbbells back to your shoulders and flow into the next squat.
- Take short breaks whenever you need - this should challenge you, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong
Use a light load and let the leg drive power the press - it is one smooth motion, not a separate squat then a slow overhead press.
Coaching cue
Punch the dumbbells straight up so they finish over the middle of your head, not out in front.
Stay safe
If you cannot straighten your arms overhead, stop the set instead of heaving the weights up.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Do the squat and the press as two separate slow movements, or use lighter weights.
- Harder: Use heavier dumbbells, or set a number of reps you finish without putting them down.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio, Quads
- Secondary: Front delts, Glutes
