How to do the Farmer Walk (Conditioning)

Cardio and Core · also works upper back, calves

Step by step

  1. Set a dumbbell on each side, hinge down, and grip both firmly.
  2. Stand up fully tall with the weights hanging at your sides.
  3. Brace your core, pull your shoulders back, and walk with steady, even steps.
  4. Cover your set distance or time, keeping the weights from swinging.
  5. Take short breaks whenever you need - this should challenge you, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong

Stand fully upright with your shoulders back the whole walk - leaning forward or letting the weights pull you into a slump strains the back.

Coaching cue

Squeeze the handles hard and take short, quick steps so the weights do not swing.

Stay safe

Set the weights down by hinging at your hips, not by dropping them near your feet.
