How to do the Gastroc Wall Calf Stretch
Step by step
- Stand facing a wall and step one foot well back, both toes pointing forward.
- Keep the back leg straight with the heel pressed flat on the floor.
- Bend the front knee and lean into the wall until the back calf stretches.
- Breathe and hold, then switch legs.
The thing people get wrong
Keep the back knee straight and the heel down - straightening the knee targets the large upper calf muscle.
Coaching cue
Point the back foot straight at the wall so the arch does not roll inward.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Step the back foot closer to the wall.
- Harder: Step the back foot farther back so the lean is steeper.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Calves
