How to do the Outdoor Incline Walk

Cardio · also works glutes, calves

Step by step

  1. Find a gentle hill or sloped path and start at a comfortable walking pace.
  2. Lean slightly forward from the ankles and drive through your legs going up.
  3. Hold a steady effort on the climb where you can still talk in short sentences.
  4. Shorten your stride and control your steps on the way back down.
  5. Take short breaks whenever you need - this should warm you up, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong

Keep the uphill effort conversational rather than all-out, and slow down on the descent - going down fast is where knees get overloaded.

Coaching cue

Push through your whole foot going up and stay tall instead of folding at the waist.

Stay safe

Watch for uneven ground and traffic, especially coming down when your legs are tired.

Make it easier or harder
