How to do the KB Clean & Press (Conditioning)
Step by step
- Stand over the bell, feet shoulder width, and hinge at your hips to grab the handle with one hand.
- Hike the bell back between your legs, then snap your hips forward to clean it to your shoulder, keeping it close.
- Press it overhead until your arm is straight, with your wrist stacked over your elbow.
- Lower it to your shoulder, then back between your legs, and repeat for your reps.
- Finish all reps on that side, then switch hands and repeat - rest whenever you need.
The thing people get wrong
Keep your wrist straight and stacked under the bell in the rack and overhead - a bent-back wrist is where clean-and-press strain shows up.
Coaching cue
Guide the bell up close to your body so it rolls onto your forearm instead of flipping over onto it.
Stay safe
Do not press overhead if your shoulder pinches; clean the bell and set it down instead.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Do just the clean with a lighter bell, setting it down after each rep.
- Harder: Use a heavier bell, or switch hands every rep without setting it down.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio, Front delts
- Secondary: Glutes, Core
