How to do the Kettlebell Swing (Conditioning)
Step by step
- Stand with feet shoulder width, the kettlebell on the floor a step in front.
- Hinge at your hips, grab the handle, and hike the bell back between your legs.
- Snap your hips forward to float the bell up to about chest height.
- Let the bell swing back down as you hinge again, working 20 to 30 second bursts.
- Take short breaks whenever you need - this should challenge you, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong
The power comes from snapping your hips, not lifting with your arms or lower back - hinge at the hips and let the bell float, do not squat it up.
Coaching cue
Squeeze your glutes and stand fully tall at the top of every swing.
Stay safe
Check nothing and nobody is in front of you; if the handle slips the bell flies forward.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Swing to belly height with a lighter bell, or practice the hinge with no weight.
- Harder: Use a heavier bell, or stretch the bursts to 40 seconds.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio, Glutes
- Secondary: Hamstrings, Core
