How to do the Lat Pulldown
Step by step
- Sit at the machine and set the thigh pad snug, then grip the bar wider than shoulders.
- Sit tall with a slight lean back and your chest lifted.
- Pull the bar down toward your upper chest, driving your elbows down and back.
- Squeeze your lats and shoulder blades at the bottom.
- Let the bar rise slowly back to a full stretch overhead, staying in control.
The thing people get wrong
Pull the bar to your upper chest, not behind your neck, and lead with your elbows. Avoid swinging your torso to yank the weight down.
Coaching cue
Keep your chest lifted and your shoulders pulled down away from your ears as you pull.
Stay safe
Set the thigh pad snug first; if the weight lifts you off the seat, it is too heavy.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use a lighter weight so you can pull without leaning back.
- Harder: Take three seconds to let the bar rise back up.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Lats, Upper Back
- Secondary: Biceps, Forearms
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
