How to do the Lean-Away Lateral Raise
Step by step
- Hold a sturdy post or rack with one hand and let your body lean away from it.
- Hold a dumbbell in the free hand, which now hangs slightly across your body.
- Raise the dumbbell straight out to the side up to about shoulder height.
- Lead with your elbow and pinky, feeling a deeper stretch at the bottom.
- Lower slowly, finish your reps, then turn around, swap hands and repeat on the other side.
The thing people get wrong
The lean is the whole point: it lets the side delt stretch further at the bottom. Keep the leaning arm straight and your torso still.
Coaching cue
Raise the dumbbell straight out to the side of your body, not forward toward your face.
Stay safe
Hold a bolted-down rack or post, never a loose or wheeled object; if it moves you fall sideways under load.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Stand upright without the lean until the side raise feels solid.
- Harder: Pause for two seconds at the top of each rep.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Side delts
