How to do the Low-Impact Row (Steady)
Step by step
- Strap in your feet and take a relaxed overhand grip on the handle.
- Push with your legs first, then lean your torso back, then pull the arms in.
- Reverse the order on the way back: arms out, torso forward, then knees bend.
- Keep the strokes smooth, even, and relaxed at a steady pace.
- Take short breaks whenever you need - this should build you up, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong
Drive with your legs and keep the effort easy - rounding your lower back to pull with your arms is what turns a gentle row into a strain.
Coaching cue
Take about twice as long sliding back out as you do driving with your legs.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Row in shorter blocks with a rest between them.
- Harder: Add time, or raise the stroke rate slightly while staying relaxed.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio, Upper Back
- Secondary: Lats, Hamstrings, Quads
