How to do the Machine Leg Extension
Step by step
- Sit with your back against the pad and your knees lined up with the machine's pivot point.
- Set the roller pad so it rests across the front of your lower shins, just above your ankles.
- Hold the seat handles, then straighten your knees to lift the pad in a smooth, controlled motion.
- Pause briefly at the top and squeeze your thigh muscles.
- Lower the pad slowly back down without letting the weight crash.
The thing people get wrong
Control the lowering phase; do not let the weight yank your knees back. Avoid jerking or swinging to move heavier loads.
Coaching cue
Keep your back on the pad and your hips down instead of leaning back to heave the weight up.
Stay safe
Stop if you feel pinching in the front of the knee; lighten the weight or shorten the range.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use lighter weight and stop short of fully straight.
- Harder: Hold the top position for two seconds on every rep.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
