How to do the Overhead Triceps Stretch
Step by step
- Raise one arm overhead and bend the elbow so the hand drops behind your head.
- Use the other hand to gently ease the elbow back and down.
- Keep your ribs down so you do not arch the low back.
- Breathe and hold, then switch arms.
The thing people get wrong
Ease the elbow back gently and keep the ribs down - do not arch the back to feel more stretch.
Coaching cue
Walk the hand as far down your back as it will go before easing the elbow back.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Skip the hand pressure and just reach the hand down your back on its own.
- Harder: Reach the other hand up your back from below and try to link fingers.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Triceps
- Secondary: Lats
