How to do the Plate Front Raise
Step by step
- Hold a weight plate by its edges with both hands, arms hanging in front of your thighs.
- Stand tall with a small bend in the elbows and your core braced.
- Raise the plate straight up in front of you to about eye level.
- Keep your arms nearly straight and feel the front of your shoulders working.
- Lower the plate back down slowly to your thighs.
The thing people get wrong
Do not lean back or swing the plate up with your hips. If you have to arch, use a lighter plate and go slower.
Coaching cue
Hold both hands level on the sides of the plate so it stays flat as it rises.
Stay safe
Keep a firm grip on the plate edges; a sweaty grip lets it slip straight down onto your feet.
Make it easier or harder
- Harder: Pause for two seconds with the plate at eye level.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Front delts
