How to do the Single-Arm Overhead Press

Front delts and Triceps · also works side delts, core

Step by step

  1. Stand tall holding one dumbbell at shoulder height, palm facing forward or in.
  2. Brace your core and squeeze your glutes so you do not lean.
  3. Press the dumbbell straight overhead until the arm locks out beside your ear.
  4. Resist tipping toward the free side as you push.
  5. Lower under control, finish all your reps on that arm, then switch arms.
The thing people get wrong

Do not lean away from the weight to help it up - stay upright and let the shoulder do the pressing.

Coaching cue

Brace your side ribs as if someone were about to shove you sideways.

Stay safe

If a rep stalls, let the dumbbell drift out to the side away from your head rather than fighting it.

Make it easier or harder
