How to do the Smith Machine Squat
Step by step
- Set the bar on your upper back and position your feet slightly in front of the bar line.
- Rotate the bar to unrack it and take a breath to brace.
- Bend your knees and squat straight down along the fixed bar path.
- Lower until your thighs are about parallel, keeping your back braced.
- Drive up and rotate the bar to re-rack when finished.
The thing people get wrong
Set your feet slightly forward, not right under the bar - the fixed path can strain the knees if feet are too far back.
Coaching cue
Push your knees out over your toes as you lower and keep your chest tall.
Stay safe
Practice twisting the bar to re-rack it from the bottom position before you load heavy weight.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use lighter weight and stop above parallel.
- Harder: Pause two seconds at the bottom of each rep.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads, Glutes
- Secondary: Hamstrings
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
