How to do the Speed Skater Shuffle
Step by step
- Start in a low athletic stance with knees bent, hips back, and chest up.
- Push off one foot and slide sideways onto the other, staying low the whole time.
- Keep the pushes long and low so your feet skim the floor instead of leaving it.
- Swing your arms across your body in rhythm with each side-to-side push.
- Shuffle back and forth for your set time, resting whenever you need.
The thing people get wrong
This one stays low and grounded - if you are leaping and landing on one leg it has turned into a skater hop, which is a harder, higher-impact drill.
Coaching cue
Keep your hips low and push sideways off the outside edge of your foot.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Take smaller, slower side steps standing a little more upright.
- Harder: Stay lower, push farther each side, or touch the floor at each end.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio, Glutes
- Secondary: Quads, Calves
