How to do the Standing Cable Side Crunch
Step by step
- Set a cable handle at the top of the machine and stand side-on to it, holding the handle in the hand nearest the stack.
- Stand tall about a stride away, feet hip-width, with a slight bend in the knees.
- Bend straight down and away from the machine, pulling your ribs toward your hip on that side.
- Let the cable pull you slowly back up, staying tall and keeping tension the whole way.
- Finish your reps, then turn around and work the other side.
The thing people get wrong
Bend straight sideways, not forward - if you twist or rotate, you lose the target and stress the low back.
Coaching cue
Control the way back up instead of letting the cable snap you upright.
Stay safe
Keep both feet planted; if the stack pulls you off balance toward the machine, drop the weight.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use a lighter setting and bend only a few inches to each side.
- Harder: Pause one second at the bottom and take three seconds to come back up.
