How to do the Low-Impact Step Touch
Step by step
- Stand tall with your feet together and arms relaxed.
- Step one foot out to the side and tap the other foot in to meet it.
- Step back the other direction and tap, keeping one foot always on the floor.
- Add big arm swings in rhythm to raise your effort.
- Take short breaks whenever you need - this should warm you up, not wear you out.
The thing people get wrong
Keep one foot planted on every step so it stays truly low-impact - there is no jump, just a smooth side-to-side tap and swing.
Coaching cue
Push off firmly to travel a full step sideways rather than shuffling in place.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Take smaller steps and keep your arms low.
- Harder: Step wider and add a knee lift on each tap.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Cardio
- Secondary: Calves
