How to do the Step-Up

Quads and Glutes · also works core

Step by step

  1. Stand facing a sturdy knee-height box or bench.
  2. Place one whole foot flat on the surface.
  3. Drive through that top foot to stand all the way up onto the box.
  4. Bring the trailing foot up to meet it, standing tall.
  5. Step back down with control and repeat, finishing all reps on that leg before switching legs.
The thing people get wrong

Push through the foot on the box rather than pushing off your bottom foot - if you bounce off the floor, the working leg is doing less.

Coaching cue

Stand all the way tall on top of the box before you step back down.

Stay safe

Use a box that cannot tip or slide, and step down instead of jumping off.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
