How to do the Heavy Suitcase Carry

Core and Forearms · also works upper back, traps

Step by step

  1. Set a single heavy dumbbell or kettlebell beside one foot and pick it up with that hand.
  2. Stand tall, brace your core, and pull the shoulder blade down and back.
  3. Walk with slow, even steps, keeping both shoulders and hips level.
  4. Actively resist leaning toward the loaded side the entire distance.
  5. Set the weight down under control, then repeat carrying on the other side.
The thing people get wrong

Do not let the weight tip you sideways - staying vertical against that pull is the exercise, not the walking.

Coaching cue

Keep your steps short and even; a heavy load tempts you into a wide, waddling stride.

Stay safe

Set the weight down before your grip fails so it does not drop on your foot.

Make it easier or harder
