How to do the Barbell Overhead Press
Step by step
- Stand with the bar racked at your upper chest, hands just outside shoulders, feet hip-width.
- Brace your core and squeeze your glutes to make your torso solid.
- Press the bar straight up, moving your head slightly back to let it pass.
- Once the bar clears your face, push your head through so it travels over your crown.
- Finish with the bar overhead and your biceps by your ears, then lower with control.
The thing people get wrong
Squeeze your glutes and brace hard so you do not lean back and arch. Move the bar in a straight vertical line, not out in front of you.
Coaching cue
Keep the bar moving once it leaves your chest; pausing in front of your face is where reps stall.
Stay safe
If a rep stalls overhead, lower it to your chest under control instead of letting it fall behind you.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Press dumbbells instead, one in each hand.
- Harder: Pause one second at your chest between every rep.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Front delts, Triceps
- Secondary: Side delts, Upper Back, Core
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
