How to do the Couch Stretch

Quads and Hips

Step by step

  1. Kneel with your back to a wall or couch and slide one shin up against it, toes pointing up.
  2. Step the other foot forward and plant it flat so you are in a half-kneeling position.
  3. Pad the down knee with a towel or mat if the floor is hard.
  4. Tuck your tailbone under and lift your chest tall until you feel the front thigh and hip stretch.
  5. Keep your low back flat rather than arched, hold and breathe, then switch sides.
The thing people get wrong

Tuck your tailbone under rather than arching your low back - the stretch should be felt in the front of the hip and thigh, not the spine.

Coaching cue

Keep the back shin flat against the wall with the toes pointing up the whole time.

Stay safe

Stop if the kneeling knee hurts; this position presses the kneecap hard into the floor.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
