How to do the Dumbbell Step-Up
Step by step
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand and stand facing a sturdy box or bench.
- Place one whole foot flat on the box.
- Push through that top foot to stand all the way up on the box.
- Bring the trailing foot up under control without hopping off the floor.
- Step back down slowly, then repeat leading with the same leg before switching.
The thing people get wrong
Drive up through the whole top foot - do not push off or bounce with the floor leg to cheat the rep up.
Coaching cue
Stand all the way up on the box with the hip straight before you step back down.
Stay safe
Use a box that cannot tip or slide, and step down under control rather than hopping off.
Make it easier or harder
- Easier: Use a lower box, or do it without weights.
- Harder: Pause at the top with the trailing foot hovering before stepping down.
Muscles worked
- Primary: Quads, Glutes
- Secondary: Core
What to do instead
Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.
Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
