How to do the Barbell Push Press

Front delts and Triceps · also works side delts, quads, core

Step by step

  1. Hold a barbell racked on your front shoulders, hands just outside your shoulders.
  2. Dip by bending your knees a few inches while keeping your torso upright.
  3. Drive up hard through your legs and press the bar overhead to a full lockout.
  4. Lower the bar back to your shoulders under control before the next dip.
The thing people get wrong

Keep the dip short and straight down - bending forward at the hips sends the bar out front instead of straight overhead.

Coaching cue

Dip and drive as one fast move with no pause at the bottom of the dip.

Stay safe

Catch the bar with soft knees and lower it under control; do not let it crash onto your chest.

What to do instead

Same job, different movement — useful if you don't have the equipment or it doesn't feel right today.

Daily Coach builds this into a real weekly plan. It picks the exercises for your equipment and experience, swaps around injuries you tell it about, and tracks what you actually lifted.
